Dyngus Day. (if you’re not familiar, shame on you…and read on.)
It has been said that South Bend has the 3rd rowdiest Dyngus Day celebration in the world after 1. Poland and 2. Chicago. What’s Dyngus Day, you ask? Read about it here. Kidding – that was a link to our site. Thanks for the traffic boost. Anyway, read about Dyngus Day from a former ND prof here: Dyngus Day. Also known as “Wet Monday,” Dyngus Day is all but a holy day of obligation to most Poles, many of whom made up South Bend’s early immigrant population. Essentially, it entails Polish sausage, beer and drunken daytime debauchery.
Where do I go for Dyngus Day? Well, you’ve missed it, but that’s an excellent segue into where I hung out this past weekend. Saturday morning, I met a friend at Joe’s Tavern. If you haven’t been here, you absolutely have to go. From what they told me, it’s where they shot a few scenes in Rudy. 3 things worth mentioning about Joe’s Tavern:
1. Frog legs. They serve fried frog legs. 2. According to the promotional material, they are the “Dyngus Day Headquarters.” I’m not sure many bars even knew that option was available. 3. Their hamburgers are the best I’ve ever had…and they’re cheap. I’m serious. Check it out. 1201 Dunham St.
I would have thought the myriad Dyngus Day garb bogus had I not discovered another gem Friday night: McKinley Pub. It’s right near Matuba Japanese, around 2930 McKinley Ave. If you like christmas light decor, cheap (great) bar food and $3 32oz drafts, McKinley’s is worth a shot. It also claims partial ownership of Dyngus Day headquarterdom.
